Development

The Department of Product and Media Design at Fo Guang University was established in 2008, enrolling its first cohort of undergraduate students that same year. Aligned with the university’s educational philosophy of being a liberal arts-based institution that values humanities and integrates social sciences with technology, the department is positioned as an interdisciplinary design program combining product and media design. It is also the first design-related department established in eastern Taiwan.

In 2013, the department was approved to establish a master’s program to cultivate advanced professionals in product and media design. Four educational objectives were defined:

  1. To cultivate research and development capabilities in product and media design,

  2. To foster analytical abilities related to the cultural and creative industries,

  3. To nurture professional ethics and a spirit of social responsibility,

  4. To integrate aesthetics into life, living, and career education.

Additionally, six core competencies were established:

  1. Professional Knowledge

  2. Design Techniques

  3. Humanities Literacy

  4. Research and Development

  5. Integrative Analysis

  6. Communication and Expression

Through the joint efforts of faculty and students, the department has received numerous prestigious design awards both domestically and internationally each year, such as the German iF Design Award, the Young Pin Design Award (Industry-Academia Collaboration Gold Award), the KYMCO Design Challenge Gold Award, and the Times Young Creative Awards for Best University.

Educational Development Goals

The Department of Product and Media Design aims to cultivate students with the following core competencies:

  1. Product Design and Cultural Creativity
    Integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern design to develop practical skills in creating cultural and creative products.

  2. Digital Media and AI-Driven Design
    Mastering digital skills such as image editing, animation, and interactive web design, while applying artificial intelligence to enhance content creation and user experience.

  3. Marketing Strategy and AI-Integrated Creativity
    Developing branding strategies and marketing thinking, utilizing AI tools to boost design efficiency and creative thinking, and strengthening cross-media integration performance.
